Calderdale Council Transfer of Assets

Calderdale Council are looking at ways to give local people a greater say in how public buildings are used. They think that land and property (assets currently Council-owned and operated) might, in certain cases, be owned and operated more effectively by the people who use them regularly. Calderdale Council want to help community organisations find the best means of delivering the vital services they provide, to help them better engage with residents, and to help them bring neighbourhoods together. This might mean giving those organisations effective ownership of buildings by renting them to them on a long term basis. It might even mean community organisations become outright owners of certain assets. Calderdale Council are drawing up a framework to help them improve the way they do this. This framework will ensure that the buildings and land made available for community ownership are suitable, and that the community groups who wish to own a particular building or piece of land have the ability to do so successfully.

From NCVO's Foresight Team

It feels like it's been a long time coming but today the UK is technically in the grips of the 'R' word for the first time since 1991. Gross domestic product fell by 1.5% in the last three months of 2008 after a 0.6% drop in the previous quarter which represents the biggest quarter-on-quarter decline since 1980. This means that the widely accepted definition of a recession - two consecutive quarters of falling economic growth - has been met.
NCVO have been dutifully posting news and updating our drivers to reflect and analyse the effects of the changing economic climate on the VCS since the crisis started last year.
Below are some of NCVO's most useful links to help you think through some of the opportunities and risks for your organisation and navigate your way through the recession. NCVO in conjunction with the Centre for Charity Effectiveness and the Regional Forum are also running a training day for development workers which will explore which drivers are relevant to your organisation and how to use them effectively in planning during a recession - for more information and to book click here: www.ncvo-vol.org.uk/supporting

Third Sector Trends Study

A highly interesting document looking at the impact of changes in funding on the sector. The paper outlines the policy and research background to the new local study of the third sector in the North East and Cumbria, commissioned by the Northern Rock Foundation (NRF) in December 2007. With major changes taking place in the local third sector's funding environment and a lack of relevant, authoritative and comprehensive information on the local sector, NRF decided to commission a new study.
